The visual material in a book can take many form, such as photographic images or illustrations.

When including images in the book, think about this

  • Deliver the images as seperate files

  • Never resave images but deliver them in their original format. Otherwize you risk losing the quality of the images.

  • Check that the images have a sufficiently high resolution. This means at least 300 dpi for photographic pixel-based images. For scanned line art and drawings, at least 1000 dpi is required for acceptable print quality.

  • Never crop or manipulate the images in any image processing software. Experience is needed to ensure that important image details are not lost. In addition, a calibrated monitor is needed to assess the colours correctly.

  • If you have any doubts about quality, format ir anything else, send your images to us. It is improtant that we identify any problem as early as possible. It is not uncommon for images to be a souce of delays in the production time.

Delivery to the publisher

When images are to be included in a book, we would like you to deliver them as seperate files in the original format of the image (images that are mounted in a word document, for example, must be removed from the document by the editor and resaved, which may reduce the quality of the image)

Numbering and placement of characters in the script

Give the separate image files unique names based on their location in each chapter. Images in chapter 1 are named figure 1_1, figure 1_2 and so on. Tables are also numbered in the same way, table 2_1, table 2_2 and so on. If there are several different types of images in the book such as photographs and schematic figures, it can also be a good idea to number them in series with different names to clarify the varying content.
Enter the name of the figure followed by the figure text or table text in the place in the manuscript where you want the figure to be placed. This makes it easy for the editor or educational material developer to understand where each figure or table should be.

Own photos

When you take your own photos, your camera should be set to use the largest image size(many pixels) and highest quality (low compression).
It's easy to be temted to reduce the numer of pixels and choose lower quality - to fit mor images on your camera's memory card - but this will be penalised when the images are printed.

Photographs for photo agency

If you wish to have a photograpic in your book but have not found such image or want to take a photograph youself, contact the publisher and the editor can help you. Images are often available from the photo agencies wgich the publisher has an agreement.

Images from the web

Images from the web often cause problems. The image may look nice and big on the screen, but with the fine points used in printing on paper, the image will be very small, perhaps only a few centimetres in size. If you enlarge it, it will have the typical "pixelated" appearance. An image covering 1/4 of normal minitor is enoughy for an image that is about 4 centimetres in point.

Copyright

If the creator of the images is different from the author any publication rights must be sought. Therefore, when delivering your images to the publisher, you should always indicate the origin of the image(photographer, artist, whether and where it has been published previously) in as much detail as possible, preferably in a seperate list of figures. On the basis of this information, our contracts and rights department will, where necessary seek authorisation form teh copyright holder to publish the images.
