Advise to editor in chief
In larger book project with many different sub authors a different editor is required who, together with the publisher is responsible for the planning and coordination of the books content. This subject editor is called the editor in chief and act as a contact between the authors and publisher.
Desposition and planning
The editor in chief plans the book together with the publisher and make up an outline of the book, structure subject content and decide on the scope in relation to the course and target group.
Together with the publisher timeframes and workflow for the project and a publication date for the project is determined. Formalities such as economic and legal principles are reviewed, and the publisher informs of different royalty models. The editor in chief then determines how royalties will be distributed for the book in question.
Contact with intended authors
The editor in chief in consultation with the publisher appoints suitable co-authors for each chapter. It is also the editor in chief who take contact with the intended authors and investigates whether there is interest in participating. When all the authors have accepted their participations the editor in chief send out a list with the authors name, email, and adress to the publisher. Then the agreement signs.
Structure
For each chapter a detailed plan will be arranged that the writer will follow. Sometimes it could be an advantage that the editor in chief together with the publisher create chapter of example as a guide to the author group. The number of heading levels will be decided here(no more than 5) and if possible the same or similar chapter will be used. Information on the number of pages that each author disposes of should also be included.
Consistency and uniformity
Besides the headlines it also important that the editor in chief indicated uniformity in terms of the content of preambles/introductions, goal descriptions, enumerations, fact boxes, case descriptions, summaries, exercises, references and so on.
Digital material
Some books have both printed and digital parts. In those cases, it is important that the editor in chief has a close and continuously coopertaion with the publishers editor, partly to get support in the assesment of scripts for the digital parts, partly because technological devemlopments can change the conditions for how script should be structured.
Writing template
As soon as the writing starts the head of editor send the publishers electronic writing template with instructions to the authors. The publisher's editors helps the editor in chief with questions related to the use of templates.
Assesment of quality and scope.
The editor in chief reads all script sections or distributes them as appropriate and asses the quality and scope of the content. The editor in chief suggests corrections, deletions and additions and is responsible for ensuring that the script in consistent and that the parts work together to form the whole in good way.
It is the editor in chief who sends the reviewed script back to each author who then makes the suggested changes. The editor in chief has the publisher's responsibility to ensure that the whole corresponds to the agreement about the book that was made with the publisher from the beginning.
It can be agreed to send rough script to the publisher for feedback, advise and tips under the writing phase. The publisher and the publishers editor will be happy to help with this.
Script delivery
The editor in chief collects the manuscripts after the author have made the suggested changes and then approve the finished manuscript. Now the collected material is sent to the publisher. Manuscript will be sent to the publisher in digital file. The editor in chief runs through the finished manuscript and leaves response to the editor in chief.
Foreword and author presentations
The editor in chief writes the foreword and coordinates the author presentations.
Figures
The issue of figures(photos and other illustrations) must be addressed early.Number, whether they should be black and white 2 or 4 color. Preferably in connection with the discussion absout thye scope of the individual chapters. The publisher's editor helps with advice on how the material for the fugures should be delivered.
Language review and design
The publisher is responsible for language review and final manuscript. When the script is language reviewed it will be sent back to the editor in chief who makes judgement on who should make the changes. When the changes are made the editor in chief recollect the script and send it to the publisher. Now the script is finished to send back to the publisher's production department who dinished the design and book.
Subject index
It is the editor in chief in connection with the final script coordinates the subject register, following instructions for the publisher's editor.
Proof
Ordinary two proof are sent from the publisher to the head of chief before it is sent out to the authors. The proof is a form of control. Where there is possibility to make a last check and changes the wrong parts. It is not intended to reformulate the text, delete, add etc. If it not necessary.
Each of the authors reads their own proof, but the head of editor takes responibility for the coordination and mailing. The author then send his chapter to the editor in chief who collects the corrections and see over the reviews before it is sent futher to the publisher.
If the book has a digital part the publisher arranges a proofreading for this part as well. The head of editor receives a code for log in that give access for the digital part, and a document were errors and changes could be noted in a systematic way.
Title, cover and back text.
The title is discussed by the editor in chief and the publisher. The editor in chief writes proposals for the back cover text, which is then processed further by the publisher. The publisher is responsible for the cover and is ultimately the one who makes decisions about the cover image.
